Question for respiratory person or anesthesiologist? |
I had three general anesthesias in ten days about 30 years ago. After that I noticed that my exercise endurance dropped way down... can't bike, climb hills, run, climb more than two flights of stairs, etc. Could the anesthesia have done something to my lungs? More likely coincidence. But a question comes immediately to mind. First, are you asking this 30 years later for the first time? Or have you been tested, for certain medical causes? You may have one of several conditions, possibly not related to your surgeries. Although some might argue that decreased CNS activity (even for a short time with anesthesia) could breed a break down in the body's immune system. You could be experiencing Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, which lasts for years and years. Epstein_Barr is another related syndrome. There is also a difference between Chronic Fatigue, and Reduced Endurance. Your endurance can be increased by walking and working out just a bit more each day, until you reach a normal work out threshold. This is really a tough question to answer without seeing your history, and a doctor is your obvious first line of questioning. There are so many factors such as your general condition, hence overweight? Diabetic? Hepatitis? The list goes on.. If you have ruled out serious disease, then, You might try yoga, and breathing exercises (to increase your lung capacity), but first I would verify you don't have a physical condition that is causing your problem. Have the appropriate tests done to rule out any pathology, and or problems with your ability to get oxygen to your blood. Normally lack of oxygen in the blood will create shortness of breath, fatigue and lethargy. Always seek the advice and counsel of a professional health care practitioner. Source(s): Opinion not medical advice. Bite me CHRIS. I didn't tell this person they couldn't ask a question. PI$$ OFF. I simply asked if this is the first time or if tests had been done. AS I said PI$$ off. Maybe. But hard to prove a link. With that time frame I doubt it. I dont know much about this, But, Because many of the intraoperative manipulations performed by anesthesiologists in the conduct of an anesthetic focus on the respiratory system (e.g., assessing adequacy of patient ventilation, gas exchange, acid-base balance, delivery of volatile and inhalational agents), it is important for anesthesia providers to understand how aging affects the respiratory system. Knowledge of the age-related decrease in pulmonary capacity, combined with an understanding of the effects of the anesthetic process, will aid the practitioner in selecting appropriate supportive and prophylactic measures before and after surgery in the aged patient. With such information in hand, nonagenarians and even centenarians should not be denied either elective or emergency surgery for fear of respiratory limitations. http://www.asahq.org/clinical/geriatrics... Donna. yes sure I have the same problem since I had a heart surgery. This is Ihsan. I am a Muslim.
