Mitral valve prolapse? |
Is exercise helpful or is it dangerous. I've been bike riding sometimes 10 miles in one day. Is there any limitations? I think you have been given some pretty good answers above. If you are not having symptoms then you are not limited by the condition - it is simply an incidental finding at this point. Every few years you should have an echocardiogram to verify that your condition is not worsening and causing valve leakage. If valve does begin to leak then you should take antibiotics prior to procedures that could introduce bacteria into your blood stream - dental procedures, etc to avoid an infection in your heart. You should endeavor to keep your blood pressure well controlled. (less than 130 systolic) If you have sleep apnea, get it treated. Otherwise, as far as exercise is concerned, you are in no way limited by MVP, except by your own conditioning. Good luck. Source(s): Physician assistant - cardiology Dont risk yourself. ask your doctor. There are so many variables to this question. Much has to do with the severity of the prolapse. Many people have this condition and it goes completely undetected because they are asymptomatic. Others need to cut out caffeine and other stimulants because it brings on symptoms like rapid/irregular heart beat. In all cases, doctors will tell you that you need to premedicate with an antibiotic before dental work and similar procedures to guard against bacterial endocarditis, which is a heart infection that can badly damage valves, etc. Exercise is likely to be self-driven - in other words, do what you can tolerate without having symptoms but in all cases you should be asking your doctor these types of questions. medical pro Most people with Mitral Valve Polapse do not have any symptoms. If your valve gets worse you may feel tired, dizzy or faint; get headaches, have trouble breathing, or experience chest pain or an irregular heart beat. If these symptoms occur, you should see your doctor. If you DO NOT have signs/symptoms, you don't have to change the way you live. Anyway, you should see your doctor and get an echocardiogram (ultrasound) done to determine how bad your condition is. Personal experience as I have mitral valve prolapse as well. |
