Exercising, yet putting on weight?


For the past 5 months or so i have exercised 3 times a week for 40 minutes, generally on the exercise bike. I usually push myself as hard as i can go. However, instead of loosing weight i have gone from 52kilos to 55kilos.

I think this is muscle but i dont want to put muscle on. Should I be exercising in a different way, eg less intense, or in a different sport? I don't want to put on major amounts of muscle and i would like to lose fat.

Try doing cardio exercises instead of using the bike. Try swimming or dancing.

The same thing has happened to me. I've been been trying to lose weight also and I've gained a lot in muscle. What you need to understand is the muscle you've gained is actually going to help you lose more in the long run and it's going to help you keep it off. When you have good muscle, it uses more energy at a lower level... like when you're just sitting and watching tv.

I know, it sucks short term but in the long run it's a good thing. Plus, you're tiny to start with, so I wouldn't be too worried. You're certainly getting fitter, which is the most important thing.

Cardio - e.g. running and swimming are good for weight loss but not too much muscle gain. Also, yoga is good. Anything that makes you sweat and lasts for 45 mins or more.

yep you are putting on muscles and your weight is increasing because muscles weigh more than fat!!.. try running and doing push ups and pres ups or star jumps in between..

It's just muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat.
If you want to lose fat, you should consider eating healthy :)

eat right that wont put on muscle but burn fat
