Possible to build muscle without aerobic exercise?

I would love to know if this is possible. I haven an illness where i produce too much lactic acid as my muscles are always worn out due to having poor mitochondrial function.

I've found weight lifting (gentle) has toned my arms, but i'd love to try my legs!

Problem is I can't really manage an exercise bike as my legs burn out too fast and I get out of breath to sustain any decent amout of cardio workout.

Is there a similar, slow paced exercise (or exercise equipment) for leg muscles that doesn't involve a constant rapid pulse, something gentle?

Hard question I know, sorry.

Many thanks as ever.

you dont have to do cardio, but bear in mind its alot easier/faster to get the results you are after.

Unless you are unltra skinny, you will have fat on your legs, muscle can still from, but it will be underneath the layers of fat on your body. Unless you can burn this off, you can gain all the muscle that you like, but it will never show unless the fat has gone/is reduced. Fat cannot turn into muscle, they are two separate organs.

I suggest you start walking on the tredmill, up hill at a gradient of around number 6 or 7 to start, building up as you do workouts. Eventually you will be able to get to the maximum. You dont have to run whilst doig uphill walking, but your not allowed to cling onto the bar at the front to haul you up. Thats cheating.

You can also try weight machines for your legs, but bear in mind, you do need to loose calories too. So sports games like football, netball, tennis...etc can all help. The higher your heart rate goes, the more fat you will be able to burn (just dont go bingeing on too much food afterwards!)

Also try (after warming up with a 15 min jog and then stretching) squats,- feet at hip distance apart, sit back slowly over 10 seconds on an invisable chair, have your thighs go horizontal to the floor, hold for 5 or 10 seconds, pulse if you can, then rise back up again slowly over 10 seconds, repeat 6 to 12 times. Dont let your knees come over your feet, sit backwards or you wont be getting anywhere fast.

High knee jogging: have your knees lift upto hip level/thighs are horizontal, run on the spot for 1-2 mins

running and kicking: run and have your heels kick up to tough your *ss, hold your hands over your bottom if your scared, run slowly forwards.

Lunges

Yoga (ashtanga)

If you are trying to bulk up or gain muscle, you want to in fact avoid aerobic exercise! To gain muscle, you need to lift weights! There are different types of lifts whether you want to focus on muscle tone, muscle strength, muscle endurance, etc.

For legs, I would suggest squats, dead lifts, power cleans, calf-raises. Also, you can do the machines such as leg curls which work the hamstrings, or leg extensions, which work the quads. Just google search for these exercises, and you will find hundreds of exercises for the legs.

The best and least expensive method to tone your legs is to purchase a solid barbell and do squats. You can always add weight as needed, but to begin with the weight of the bar will be enough.

To perform proper squats place the barbell behind your kneck on your shoulders, feet about shoulder-width apart, and slowly squat until your butt is about even with the back of your knees. Squating too deep will injure the knees.

When you are sitting on a chair, you can sit 2/3 of the seat and do both legs lfting up, count 5 and put down. After few weeks try putting a packet of 500g sugar or whatever in packet form on your legs and do that. Do gradually .Let your imagination adventure to replace the 500g packet.

Sure.
Why not?
Have try asking the ape-men in the zoo or in the wild?
How they swing from tree to trees?
How they climb up and down the trees all day long?
Even without aerobic.
Can even lose weight too.
By going on diet.

yoga is also good

Building muscle is as easy as using and "straining" the muscle.
To build mass, you would want to use heavier weights with fewer reps. (ex: 3 sets of 10)
To define, you would want to use a lighter weight, with many more reps. (ex: 3-6 sets of 20)
Aerobic exercises are for burning calories and building stamina, which, is necessary if your muscles have thick layers of fat on them.
Weight lifting WILL build muscle over time, but you may not notice it, or may even feel as if you are getting "bigger" as your muscle enlarges with thick layers of fat between it and the skin.

There are several machines and free weight methods that you can use to build muscle in your legs, but I would HIGHLY recommend speaking with a trainer or competent employee at your gym before going at it.

As far as the cardio fatigue, start out easy, with something that you can manage. Then, with each workout, make it slightly more difficult. (Increase the resistance, incline, speed, distance, etc.) You will eventually notice that you can run/bike/step for a much longer period of time, or a much more challenging scenario, without becoming fatigued.

is it possible for you to start out very very slow and just ever so gradually increase the amount of exercise you do as your body gets used to it? i have no clue how you can build muscle without exercising.. unless you do one of those cosmetic surgery things where they carve muscles onto you...or do calf implants.. i've heard of ppl doing those! oh yes and there are squats. try doing your exercises outdoors, it takes your mind off the 'work'and the refreshing air helps you feel better. persoanlly i hate using those machines in the gym.. feeling cooped up breathing in other ppl's perspiration.. sorry..
