You know that calorie-counter on your exercise bike????????

yeah, so does it ACTUALLY tell you the correct number of calories burnt or is it just a scandal? REALLY WANNA KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT EVIL LITTLE THING>>>thxXx:D

Most of these horrid little things do not even measure the resistance that is dialled up. They are TERRIBLE. If you use a high resistance it will almost be guaranteed to read low.

Heart rate monitors are a little better they measure your exertion but do not know your level of fitness.

If you want to know the calories that you have burnt, the best method is to use a power transducer. This is quite an expensive item and would usually only be found on the high end machines. It works by measuring output power and factoring in body efficiency. Body efficiency doesn't vary much around 24% for a couch potato or elite athlete.

Yep it costs a packet to measure this accurately.

A reasonable effort on a standard road bike (15-20 mph) will burn about 3500 Calories (1lb of ugly fat) every 100 miles.

My tip leave the "evil little thing" at home, get a standard bicycle and ride outside. When you get home measure the smile on your face. (calculations don't burn many calories)
It is a VERY rough estimate.

To obtain the best results, you need a heart rate monitor. They take a constant measure of your heartbeat, and know your age, weight, height, etc. and take this info into account

Polar makes great ones that are all held up to the standards set for ECG's. they have watches and bike computers that read from a band that you strap around your chest over your heart (wireless and coded not to get interference). Surprisingly not uncomfortable either...

You can also "google" calorie calculator. This would be your next best option. There are tons of them. They also look at more info, so it can give a better reading...
depends on the exercise bike. If it is a direct read off the cranks it will be pretty close.

If you are one of those folks who gets on the exercise bike and reads Cosmo and get mad when after 20 minutes you have only burned 65 calories...it's not the bike's fault. You have to put in an effort.

I have a road racing bicycle with a PowerTap hub and computer. I average 800-900 calories an hour on a medium-hard long ride. A average sized woman (say 5'5" tall, 130 lbs) should be able to do 400 + calories an hour.
Uh, not really. Those things are just rough guesses, since each person burns calories differerently. Even if you program in your gender, age, weight, height, etc., it's still just a guess based on statistical averages. The amount of calories you burn is a function of your fat to muscle ratio, and brown to yellow fat ratio, among many other factors. So, don't worry about those numbers, just keep exercising and reap the benefits of a strong body.
