Is it better to run or ride a bike for exercise? Explain, please.? My knees won't handle running. The pounding impact would have me laid up for days. Bicycling doesn't have the same result. For me it has to be the bike. Running with require you to use more muscles throughout your body, where riding a bike will only provide adreneline and lower muscles. It's much better to run because it gets your entire body moving and you expel more calories than when you are using only your legs. Either way you will get your heart rate up, but I would suggest concentrating on longevity if for success. If you will ride a bike significantly longer than you would run, you are better off riding the bike. Either way, make sure you get your heart up enough to break a sweat and feel slightly out of breath. Anytime you commit to cardio, you'll be in top shape in no time! I've been doing a lot of both and I have found running to be far more efficient. Skipping rope too is a very good exercise and it works your entire body. One of my premises is that your full body weight should rest on your feet for maximum efficiency. running/jogging will give you the quickest results but the best exercise is the one that you will continually do as a regular routine. It depends on your age/weight/overall physical health. Cycling is easier on the joints, but running, although challenging at first, is the best cardio/endurance workout I've found---and the most addicting. If you're a beginner, please do research first, and learn to start with a program (whether treadmill or outside) alternating power walking/jogging/running to gradually build your stamina. Of course, if your goal is overall physical health, I would recommend you do both (cross-training), plus will prevent boredom. |
