Question about exercise? |
I usually go on my exercise bike for about 30 minutes every day and I warm up for 5 minutes and cool down for 3 minutes... I woke up yesterday with a really bad cramp in my calf muscle (I think they're called a charlie horse) anyway, does anyone know what these are caused by? should I stretch before I get on the exercise bike? Any thoughts would be great!!! You're doing it right with warmup and cool down, so I wouldn't fault your exercise. There's three possibilities I can think of: 1. Dehydration and/or electrolyte depletion. You're not going long enough to get really dehydrated, but "most" poeple walk around chronically underhydrated. If your pee isn't clear or only slightly yellow, you need more water. Have a banana in case its potassium deficiency. 2. Poor circulation. I've never had the problem, so I can't tell you how to recognize it. 3. Stuff happens. Sometimes I get muscle cramps for no apparent reason. As an elite athlete, I'm all over the nutrition and stuff, so I just shrug it off. You did'nt stretch properly after your exercises. Next time remember to stretch before and after exercises, then your muscles wont stiffen up. Its best to do your stretching betweem the warm up and main exercise and then again between the exercise and cool down. http://www.netfit.co.uk/fitness/stretchi... I normally warm up - then stretch - then full exercise program then cool down then stretch. The final stretch is more important than the first one. Cramp can also be caused by salt imbalance so you might hand to look at that you are eating. :) I'd suggest wamring up and cooling down for longer and not changing the temperature throught the ride and 10-20 minutes after (eg. no fans, air con, heaters) so that your body temperature can adjust again. You need to stretch out after you workout and also look at how much you are drinking. I think that you may be alittle dehydrated and need to drink more water. |
