With only a little over $1,700 to spend it's going to be tough finding a new bike for that amount unless it's one of those cheaper chinese made bikes (but I still wouldn't trust the reliability or getting spare parts issues). All things being equal, you'll probably have to find a low hour, slightly used dirtbike in your local classifieds. I would look around for Yamaha TTR-125's, Kawasaki KLX125's, Suzuki DR-Z 125's, or possibly a Honda CRF100 or 150 based on what you said on your weight and height. Since you're stepping up to a gas dirtbike now here are the pro's and con's:

Pro's:
1.more speed! (this is always a good thing)
2.since most of these bikes are 5-speed, you'll now have your choice of whatever gear you want
3.Just dump the gas in and go! (or premix gas/oil depending on whether you do the 2 or 4 stroke thing)
4.parts for most Japanese bikes are readily available
5.there are a tons of aftermarket goodies available for these bikes, so chances are good if you don't like something, a company already makes a replacement part for it.

Now the Con's part:
1.more maintenance. (oil will now have to be changed, brake pads replaced, chain and sprockets swapped when they get old, and suspension rebuilds
2.more noise. (this is a big issue with offroad right now. Keep your bike as quiet as possible to avoid the harassment)
3.boys that can't accept that you can ride better than them (I know this last one sounds funny, but it's true).
Now quit reading this and go buy your bike and ride! :-)

Go to some shops and sit on the bikes to see what you fit on - at your age, the larger engine bikes might be to big for you.
Ask the sales people to help.
Ask whatever you want and get as much info as you need.
You don't have to buy from them.
