Why put your hand over dirt bike exhaust?

hey, i was at the races today and see a lot of people putting there hand over there exhaust, i do it, but im just wondering why you do it. the feel the firing pattern?

A number of reasons...to see if the engine is spitting anything out like oil particles or unburnt fuel particles or carbon dust, etc. A good gearhead can smell his hand after holding it in the exhaust and tell if the engine is burning rich or lean. And to feel the exhaust to test for heat and a good compression/ignition hit.

I don't know why others do it.
I do it to lower the exhaust noise, so I can hear my engine run, to check for piston slap - alerting me to change the piston & rings.
It could also be used to detect a slight misfire, due to a spark plug starting to foul.

we do it up here in western NY to warm our hands up !!!

Actually riders do this when there on the line before a race to make sure there engine is running. it gets pretty load on the line and is hard to tell if your bike is running over the sound of other bikes.

Exhaust temp to see if the bike is warm. Most 2-strokers do it but the thumpers do it too. Don't want to beat on a cold motor during the race, not as powerful, and hard on the motor (like racing isn't).

The idea is to get the engine warm then shut it off. Shut off to save the fuel (cuz your not full to save weight) but you can't just go ride around to warm it up either)
