Dirt Bike Clutch making a clicking sound.? |
I have a '93 Kawasaki KX250, and recently the clutch started making a little clicking noise. Sounds alot like the click you'd hear if you hit a couple thin pieces of wood together like 2 wooden spoons, or 2 paint stir sticks. I only really hear it when I squeeze the clutch lever. I'm mainly wondering 1. What is causing it 2. How easy it is to fix. 3. How big of a problem this actually is. I'm pretty cheap, so if I can keep running it like this with no further problems other than the sound (which doesn't bother me that much), then I'd just put it off. But if its a major problem, I'll fix it. Sounds like your clutch cable may be in a bind. This can be easily checked by disconnecting the cable from the engine/clutch and engaging the clutch lever (actually on the clutch) with a pair of pliers or other tool. If you don't hear the ticking noise when doing this then just replace your cable. If you do still hear the noise then you probably have a potentially big problem and will possibly need to replace the clutch assmebly. Unless of course there are separate replacement parts for your particular clutch. Take the dust cover off and clean it, (the clutch pack). Use a good brake cleaner-spray type, watch your eyes, burns like hell if you get it in your eyes, it's probably a dry clutch so don't spray it with wd40 or any other lube, and don't take it apart if you have never done this before, (the clutch pack). If it is a wet clutch then I don't know what to tell you, except it might need adjusting or disc replacement, and you will need to replace the oil. If a bunch of junk falls out,ie. bits of fiber like things, pieces of spring, metal, when you remove the dust cover then you got a problem, rebuild time. But all in all it sounds like you have a problem with the clutch springs since it only does it when you squeeze the clutch, cause when you are using your clutch you are pulling against the springs that hold your clutchs together and they or one of them might be broken or out of tension. I had a '72 Bultaco persang and the clutch springs were individually adjusted on the clutch pack and if I remember right, there was a big center spring behind a big nut that pulled the whole thing away from the pressure plate when disingauging the clutch. Well hope this can help out or at least give you an idea of what to look for. |
