Need to know what kind of lub to put around drive shaft (around the chain) on a 49.9cc pocket dirt bike?
On a non o-ring chain I find 90wt gear oil is probably the best lubricant. Lubrication between the rollers and the sprockets is important and products like chain wax will do a good job of this, but where chains wear out is in the surfaces where the pins join the links together. If you have a worn chain handy you can see this by laying a couple dozen links of the worn chain flat on a table and alternately pushing and pulling the ends of the chain. You'll notice that you can change the length of the chain a substantial difference by doing this. Chain wax wont penetrate well into the pins, but gear oil will if you apply it generously enough then remove the excess after working the oil in by rotating the wheel a few dozen times. clean it with some type of solvent and Bel-ray make chain wax Go to any motorcycle shop and buy chain lube. They'll probably sell different brands. Any one of them will be OK.
