How do you bunny hop on a dirt jumping bike?

How do you bunny hop on a dirt jumping bike?

I am going to copy and paste an answer I left for another person who asked a similar question yesterday rather than type the whole thing out again... hope this helps!

"Hardtail" by its current definition means that you do have a suspension fork, so I will make this explanation around that likelihood.
The other question is "do you have clipless pedals, like SPD's or Time or something?" If so, they make bunny hopping MUCH easier!

First off, take this to a grassy or soft dirt area where you can fall without hurting yourself.
Second, WEAR A HELMET!
Third, do this at low speed until you get the hang of it.

1) while riding forward slowly, begin to coast with your pedals level (one in front, one in back), stand up over your pedals and lean VERY slightly forward.
2) compress your suspension fork by pushing down on it.
3) wait for the fork to rebound, this will help you get the front wheel off the ground.
4) as the fork is rebounding, pull up on the handlebar, this will give you a front wheel hop.
Keep repeating this maneuver until it is second nature before trying to bring the rear wheel off the ground..
5) once you have mastered the front wheel hop, try positioning your body so that you are a little forward of the bottom bracket spindle. The reason for leaning a bit forward is that it unweights the rear wheel very slightly, making it a bit easier to POP off the ground.
6) Now begin the process as described above over again. This time, as you compress the fork and wait for the rebound, bend your knees and push down with your whole body, this will help you compress the fork, but will also compress the rear tire slightly, which will help you pop the rear up as well.
7) As the fork and tires begin to decompress (this whole process will take less than a second) you will want to return the energy you used from your body into your legs by springing your whole body upward
7.1) If you are using flat pedals, pointing your toes VERY slightly downward and then pushing back/up with your feet/legs you will sort of create extra traction on your pedals which you can use to pull your feet up with. You will bring your feet up toward the core of your body through your knees.
7.2) If you have clipless pedals, the extra attention spent on your feet won't be necessary. The fact that your feet are directly connected to the pedal means that by simply lifting your feet up toward the core of your body through your knees, the pedals (and thus the bike) will come with you.
8) if you practice this a LOT, you will feel your rear wheel starting to get further and further off the ground. Once you start getting a few inches off the ground, another technique comes in handy. Believe it or not, by rotating your wrists forward on the handlebar, you can influence the rate at which your rear wheel comes up. This doesn't have to be a death grip type of exercise, more like a gentle forward twist that helps you fully realize the potential of your bunny hopping.

Practice each of these techniques over a couple days and you will feel pretty decent control, and practice this over a few months and you will be SHOCKED at what you might be able to do. Although I naturally understood how to bunny hop for some weird reason, I still practiced these concepts until I was able to bunny hop 3-3.5 feet in the air at a high rate of speed! Yeah, I didn't believe it either, but a buddy of mine took a pic of me hopping over a 3 foot high curb thing, and I had cleared it by many inches!

This isn't a strength exersize, it is finesse! It's almost all in your legs, the strongest part of you (most likely!) Source(s): Bike mechanic/salesperson/geek/form... racer for many years!
