Used Dirt Bikes?

I have been watching the market for used dirt bikes and am wondering if it is better to get a older bike (2001) in good shape, or a newer bike (2004-5) in "OK" shape? Please explain your answer. Thx.

good question!!!

each year (or two) there are usually some pretty drastic improvements made in off road bikes. for example, in 2001 there were very few 4 stroke bikes competing in MX, where now you rarely see a 2 stroke in the higher levels. there has been drastic improvement!!!

if you are considering an old bike (like 2001), you are probably looking at 2 stroke. these are relatively easy to maintain and do top ends on to keep the engine "Fresh" and on the high end of power. these are typically going to be less expensive, since they are older (they were also cheaper to purchase new back then too).

if you are considering something newer (like'04-'05), more than likely the majority of what you find will be a 4 stroke (as most companies have discontinued their 2 stroke bikes). these can be fairly easy to maintain but some had issues with the valve train and a never ending cycle of readjusting/replacing valve (which can be quite costly). also since these are newer bike, they will more than likely cost considerably more to purchase even used (they were also higher in price off the show room floor).

of course, alot of the improvements from year to year come in frame design and even more so in suspension quality.

so it pretty much comes down to what your preference is... 2 vs 4 stroke and how important is the newer technology in suspension.

but you can take an older bike that runs good, get the suspension set up by a professional suspension tuner to your weight & riding style, and still kick everyones butt on the newer bikes that aren't set up correctly ... depending on how good of a rider you are. Source(s): 40 plus years riding dirt (MX, HS, CC, Enduro, etc.)
I would go with the older bike in better shape. I wouldn't really concern yourself with the year of the bike - think more about engine wear - don't worry to much about the physical appearance (if you are doing motocross, I am sure the bike is bound to get some cosmetic damage). Just find the bike in your price range that is in the best mechanical shape (engine, shocks, etc...) regardless of the year. It will last longer than a cosmetically clean bike with a beat up engine.
