Dirt bikes and ATVs continue to trespass on PA land? |
I own 110 acres of scenic farmland in Allegheny County. Although I have my land posted and blocked with fallen trees, these vehicles continue to break my signs, destroy my barriers, kills my trees and scare the wildlife. The local police don't have the time and resources to constantly chase these people. Any suggestions on how to stop them and protect this beautiful natural resource? I would talk to the cops & ask them what your suppose to do if they can't help you out. I would stay clear of any booby traps like spike strips. pits, trip lines. Use some of those ideas and that property will end up not being your do to the law suit somebody slaps on you. What if somebody was walking through your property and steps on the spike strip? Anything is possible & you better plan on that. I don't know if in your area has registration for these type of vehicles trespassing. But I would keep a camera & a set of binoculars handy. Take there numbers down & snap of photo for proof. You just did a good chunk of the cops work for them. Nail a few of the people to the wall and make examples of them. Charge them for trespassing & the damage done to your property. Soon the word will get out & people will quit riding there. A few other suggestions is rather than blocking the trails & trees make a real gate that they can't just drive over or slide out of the way. Instead of just nailing the sign to a tree plant a steel post anchored in concrete, then bolt the sign to that. To provent people from just running around the the gate a few strands of barbwire fencing will prevent this. But I would also tie ribbon to the fencing so people can see it. Another thought would be just planting thorny bushes around the gates. Not to many riders are going to want to be tore up just to go for a ride. But yet it's still nothing your going to get in trouble for unlike setting up traps. Bottomline I would stay clear of setting up any type of traps unless you want to be sued by the injured person or prosecuted for assault. I'm sure the cops would find plenty of time to enforce that charge. If you can get them to stop and talk with them.. sometimes thats all it takes. If not, put up homemade spike strips like nails on a grassy covered board, or better baricades. Something that will disable the vehicle without causing a crash. Dont put a trip wire or dig a covered hole..etc. Anything that you do that causes them to get hurt, means they can and will sue you, even if its clear they are trespassing and breaking the law. Unfortunatly most states dont support ORVs with enough trails and other rideable locations. Owner of ATVs, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, and also private vacant land. i like the spike strip idea i had the same problem and i talked to some of the riders(people ive known all my life!)i told them the trails would be littered with nails and other debris i told them they were pissn me off get their own land to ride on funny how the ones with the toys are still living with mom and dad Perhaps your land cuts off access to open areas, and if so could U allow a marked route through .Just a thought seeing that open lands are harder to find anymore .Edit--25 yrs. playing on the ATVs and seen many areas cut off from us and some our fault but not all. However your farmland is much different than crown land and I can see your concern.Wish you well in what you have to do. Fence, the end, it's the only way. I know it sucks to have to fence in that much land but you wouldn't have to fence it all in just a good ways of it. The spike strip idea is good but I would do it, it'll just piss them off more and who knows how they'll get back at you. Good luck 20 years riding atc's, atv's, and dirt bikes |
