Dirt in fuel tank?

I was removing the fuel tank of my bike, and when I unplugged the hose from the fuel tap (which was turned off of course), and drained out the fuel that was left in the hose, some sediment came out (sand and dirt etc). How did it get there?

I have a new bike, however I have ridden in the rain with it many times...

Ah, the age old question. So the bike is newish- You didn't indicate whether it was a dirt bike or street bike. But nevertheless, barring vandalism, I would say you bought gas likely right after the fuel truck dumped its load into the ground tanks. That is when the sediment and impurities are stirred up and even though the gas nozzle has a filter, many things can and do get pumped into your tank. The thing you've got to be wondering about though is the fuel bowl in the carburator. That's a bad place for sediment. The tank you can remove and wash out with a mild solvent. The carburator has a nut and seal USUALLY at the low side or bottom of the carburator. Use a wrench and drain the bowl into a clean cup. Did contaminents come out? If so, gently wash it out with carb cleaner and then put the bolt back in place. prime it and run it with all fresh fuel and see what happens. Remember to replace the filter first! Is it a new bike? How do you refuel? With a dirt bike you always fill from a can. Was it always clean? How about the inside of the tank. Do you see any surface rust or scale or is it shiny metal? Or is it a plastic tank? More info is always better than not enough.
Contaminated fuel
"How did it get there?"

I love a good mystery! Either you put it in using dirty fuel or somebody doesn't like you and dumped a handful of dirt in your tank.

Beats me, but you need to flush your tank, lines and most likely disassemble and clean the carb unless you have a in line filter. Good luck
maybe crap
