A question for car owners? |
I've always been VERY EXCITED at the thought of finally owning my very first car. My whole family have cars while I usually stick to my mountain/dirt bike. I love my bike very much as I love to cycle almost everywhere, including to work, which would explain why I'm so fit & slim, LOL! Anyway, I digress. Despite all that, I must admit, there are days when a car is a real life-saver compared to a bike. One of the coolest things I can think about owning a car is at least if it's pouring rain outside, you don't get soaking wet on the way to work like you do on a bike. I would like to ask people who are owners of a car if you could please give me your personal opinions on what you would consider to be advantages & disadvantages of owning a car. Lemme get you started, pollution for one thing. What else? No advantage. Car seems like it cost half your income. it costs a hell of a lot of money! fuel, insurance, tax and repairs are the main ones...other that that its great, heating, music n passengers if u want. Disadvantages would be insurance costs, fatal car accidents, petrol is expensive, you have to clean the car, you will put on weight from driving everywhere AND because you can use drive thru's, parking costs money and cars are expensive. But yes they are very convenient and I couldn't imagine life without one, especially if you have kids and shopping to move around : ) A car is a metal box into which one pours their money. I also ride and own a motorcycle, and own two cars. I would rather ride than drive any day, BUT I have to admit as I get older I prefer to stay dry and warm, and as my fellow motorists seem to get more and more careless about motorcycles sharing the road, I feel like less a target in my car. It is also nice to ride to work with the love of my life next to me (we work together), to have storage for packages and purchases on the way home, etc. The reality is that you make the decisions based on your life and lifestyle. In the end, a car and a motorcycle serve the same purpose-to get from here to there. I don't know where you live (I'm in England) but looking out the window right now I'm glad I have a car. It's wet and miserable out there. If you don't travel great distances, buy a small car (preferable low mileage) for low insurance and good fuel economy. I love bicycles (I'm about to buy an Airframe Super 8 folding bike - if anyone knows if they're any good please mail me!) and you can't beat them for being eco-friendly, plus they give you go exercise. But when Winter comes, you really need a car to get to work otherwise you arrive freezing cold, filthy dirty and in need of a shower before you've even started. Bikes are only fun when the weather is nice and when it gets dark, or you want to travel on a busy road, they are not the safest way to travel. The only reason i have a car is because i drive an hour and a half to work everyday. If i lived closer to work, i would ride my bike too. A car is money pit. Taking good care of a car is essential if you want to keep costs to a minimum. Don't skimp on auto insurance. Get more than adequate coverage. Oil changes, proper tire inflation, rotate tires, proper anti-freeze changes, bi-annual trans flush help keep my cars on the road instead in the mechanics garage. I still love to ride my road bike and/or mountain bike weekly. It's nice to take a ride on a bike to the bank or pharmacy when it's 80+ degrees and a clear blue sky. |
