Should I buy a motorcycle?

My father is a surgeon, so anytime I mention even the idea of a motorcycle he tells me how dangerous they are and then goes on about all the motorcycle accident cases he has worked on. The way I see it is that motorcycles are just as safe as any other vehicle if ridden correctly [proper speed, no lane splitting, etc], and he is just worried because all he ever sees is the bad side of motorcycling.

I rode dirt-bikes all during my childhood [don't tell my dad!] and i currently bike commute everywhere, so i'm not new to riding motorcycles or riding a two wheeled, 'invisible' vehicle in heaving traffic.

If you want to ride, you should! You don't want to get old someday and think of what could have been.

At the same time, do your research, buy a bike that is right for a beginner (any of the 250ccs are great!), take the Motorcycle Safety Course (invaluable), get protective gear and never ride without it (even for a short trip to the store) and practice, practice, practice.

Of course riding is dangerous, but lots of people die in car accidents too. You need to judge for yourself in you handle the risk and balance it with the amount of fun you can have with it.

Good luck with your decision!
I would never ride a motorcycle, so maybe I'm the wrong person to answer this, but the fact is that motorcycles are NOT just as safe as any other vehicle. You can be the safest driver in the world, but all it takes is one fool on the road who ISN'T safe (or sober) and it could be all over for you.

On a motorcycle, you don't have the protection of a steel frame around your body like an automobile, so the possibilities of what damange can be done to your body are not comparable to an auto accident. Not to mention sudden obstacles in the road, weather conditions, and the fact that auto drivers can't see you in their mirrors as well as autos. Plus, would you REALLY drive at a safe speed and not cut between cars in high traffic times? I mean, why wait if you don't have to, right?

Bottom line is, we all risk our lives when on the road, really, but you're risking a hell of a lot more when riding on a motorcycle. If you have a family or are even considering one, I would seriously recommend against buying one.
You only live once! If this is a dream of yours, by all means go and indulge. Just be careful because there are certain, obvious riskes associated with motercycle riding.
I never thought i would, but i took every safety precaution i could: took the msf class (98% of moto accidents happen w/ ppl who have NOT taken the class), got a small bike that i feel comfortable on, and ride for fun, not for utility. It is a great hobby, and can be amazingly fun. Just take it easy, ride for the ride, not the destination, and follow your heart.
