Since im no mechanic and im looking for a dirt bike i figured that if i were to buy one it should be a four stroke, but i know you need alot of displacement for a four stroke to be fast, and peppy. So now there are these new high performance four-stroke engines that are designed to be able to keep up with some of the older 2 strokes. Now I thought to myself, "hey!, problem solved". WRONG- just becuase they are four-strokes does not mean that they don't need to be maintenced rigorously. For example; the crf250x was an option that i looked heavily into until i read reviews that said the 250x had many problems and needed to be maintenenced just as much as a 2-stroke would, not including that all work and maintence on a high performance four stroke is much more complicated and much more expensive.-All this just for the benefit of what?, maybe being a little faster than the old four strokes but still not as fast as the 2 strokes which are cheaper, easier to work on, & have 2x the power. ??
i own a shop,and the newer 4 strokes aren't as bad to keep up as the older ones was ,and they have more low end torque on them also,and will out last a 2 stroke also,but one reason there building the 4 strokes is the clean air act went in to affect,and pretty soon there wont be many 2 strokes around,even on the boat engines,the 2 stroke will soon be history,once you get used to the 4 stroke engine you,ll like it a lot better,i do mine,i had a lot of problems from my trail bike,and my new one does real good ,no problems what so ever with it,and its cheaper to ride,even though it has more cc,s its still better,good luck i hope this helps.

been a certified mechanic for 36 yrs.
4 strokes last longer and have more low-end torque...which is what gets you moving. High RPM horsepower keeps you moving.
