Revive an engine after a long time? |
i have this old dirt bike from about '77 it is in perfect condition as it has sat covered for 20 years i finally got a muffler for it after somebody threw away the other one well i want to get it running and was wondering what i should do to get a start? it is a Kawasaki kd 175 (2-stroke) I think i should replace gas replace transmision fluid replace 2-stroke oil check wiring check alignment check brakes check cables anything else i should do? Remove the spark plugs and squirt some WD-40 or diesel fuel into the cylinders. This will help to soften up any rust that may have formed between the rings and the cylinder walls. Do this before starting your list, so it has time to soak in a bit. it'll also help free up the rings in the piston groove, which will give you better compression. You don't need a whole lot - just a couple of cc's in each cylinder should do it. This will also help lubricate the cylinder walls for the initial startup, since it'll take a little time for enough 2-stroke oil to get to the cylinder walls and start lubricating - especially if you have to kick it a few times. Then put new spark plugs in, and you'll probably also need new plug wires (if you can get them.) Check the ignition points (if it's that old, it probably still has points), and clean off any carbon from between the contacts with a small piece of sandpaper or an emery board. Also, check the tyres - I'd bet that the rubber has perished. This means that the sidewalls are likely to crack - really dangerous, especially if it's the front tyre! You really should also remove the carbs and clean them (including the float chamber, since this tends to gunk up fairly easily. Don't forget to replace (or at least clean) the air filter! When you do get it started, try not to rev it until it warms up all the way - keep the wear to a minimum until it loosens up a bit. Good luck, and keep it upright. Source(s): Been there, done that... You are off to a good start. You may as well get ready to have the carburetor boiled out. The old gas in it has evaporated years ago and there is a varnish in the bottom of the carb that seals off the jets. Do not check the tires but change them and put new ones on. They will deteriorate after 6 years or so and you definitely do NOT want a motorcycle tire to blow out!!! Along the way, you will find a lot more things to repair or change....trust me. Pops My thoughts i love kawasaki's. You got everything covered there but that old gas might have clogged the jets. I've seen a KX250 sit for just 4 years and get clogged jets. Might wanna put a fresh plug in it too. |
