Harley Sportster 883 or Vulcan EN500?

I was going to buy a 1995 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 from a friend for $1200. I told him it looked good but we haven't finalized the deal.

Another friend just told me he will let me have his 1996 Harley Sportster 883 dressed with a windshield highway bars and Saddlebags for $4,000.

I am not sure wich to buy. For one thing I don't want to go back on a committment, although we havn't shook on the deal.

I am not sure I could handle a sportster. I am upgrading from riding dirt bikes.

I am thinking the Vulcan is a good intermediary step.

But I have to admit the Sportster is a sweet looking machine.

the sportster is top heavy and doesnt handle curves as well as the vulcan.
I have ridden since I was a little girl YUP the hog is sweet, but u r probably right the Vulcan is prob a better intermediate. Check them both out 4 the feel and handle, I will say this Harley will require more maintenance, but also commands respect and is at least American made a rarity in its self today.
the money can be an influence in this decision. sportsters are not that much to handle; and a 500 kaw is probably easier if you are on a limited budget. have someone with experience help you check them both out to see if someone isn't trying to sell you a junker. if they both fit you (size and financially) either could be a good choice.
Having had a Vulcan 800 and now own a Harley Road King, its all about being comfortable with what you ride. My Road King felt heavy and didn't cut well when I first got it, not any more, it can cut a corner just as well as my Vulcan did. My advice to you is .... buy the Sportster, in 3-4 years when you want to upgrade you should still be able to get 4k for the bike. The Vulcan will be a give away. Don't believe the non riders on parts prices when my Vulcan needed work it wasn't cheep either.
I would get the sportster hands down. You get the crome , windshield, bars and bags. The power you will have no problem with and will be glad you opted for it after 3days of riding.

I ride a VN900C, its a great bike, but I wish I would have gotten the XL1200C Sportster, thats where my heart was and after 5800 great miles on the VN900C it's still with the Sportster. However now I would get the Superglide instead.

Bottom line - get what you really like or else you will have to live with regreat and thats not a happy feeling.
I think that it may be a good middle step, but I think that you will grow out of it within six months and have to invest in something else anyway. I say, bite the bullet and go with what will be the best in the long run.
