I looking to buy a Honda Goldwing GL1800, what are some questions that I should be asking? |
I have been on dirt bikes and crotch rockets before but this is a whole different class of motorcycle. I'm just trying to figure out what questions I should be asking and what I should be looking for when buying. Are there certain accessories that I should be looking for or some that I should stay away from. I want to make the best, most educated decision I can about buying one since they are very pricey. Hope some of the more experienced riders can give me some good advice If you have any info on good deals on used goldwings (2001-2005) I would love to hear about that as well. I have been searching classifieds, ebay, and few member clubs looking for a decent price on a one. Thanks for any help you can give There were a few factory updates that needed to be performed on the early ones, including a CRITICAL reweld of the frame, a dealership should be able to confirm that they were done. In general they are an awesome motorcycle, smooth, powerful, reliable, and great handling, you will not be disappointed. Not only frame weld failure, but overheating was an issue with some of the GL 1800s. The new Wing doesn't come with as many accessories as the GL1500 did, but like the man said, that are awesome powerful machines. A friend sold his 1000cc crotch rocket after buying an 1800 because it was redundant. His sportbiker friends friends call the Wing a "Couch rocket". :^D I too have been looking into the Goldwings. Try looking on cycletrader.com there's usually a few good ones in there. Then do a google search on them, there was a site that I found, which I don't have access to on this comp, but a person had all the main info on all the different years since it's inception. Good luck and good riding. ps... If I find that site on my other comp, I'll let you know what it is. You are moving up to a much heavier class of bike. You need to test ride one to ensure you are comfortable with this size bike. It is different than riding dirt bikes and crotch rockets. The nice thing about them is they are well balanced and very comfortable to ride. Newer ones have reverse which is nice to get them out of a parking space and a garage. The 2008 are suppose to have airbags in case of an accident. You need to make sure you can handle the weight if stopped at a light because once they get away from you, you can't stop it from falling. You will have to try to minimize the damage as much as possible. Newer ones have hydraulic center stands, if it doesn't you will need to learn how to put it up on the center stand, you need to lift and pull. Also how to upright the bike in case you do drop it and nobody else is around. I had dropped mine once at a gas station trying to set it up on the center stand, luckily it only got scratch a little. Go to yahoo and search, Christian Motorcyclist Association, you can locate your local chapter and find fellow wingers and they can help you.
