VP race fuel / pump gas mix?



A buddy gave me 4 gallons of VP Race Gas. I was planning on mixing at a 50/50 ratio for my Sportster and dirt bikes. Should I have any worries other than the Sportster may want to jump out of my hands with newfound power?

In effect, you're raising the octane. Higher octane only means additional performance if the lower octane was not providing adequate detonation control.

The bottom line is that there's a common falacy that somehow "better gas" can raise the performance level of an internal combustion engine...which, in fact, is determined by compression ratio, valve timing and other mechanical factors.

If optimum engine function is being accomplished with, say, 87 octane, no benefit is realized by using higher octane...despite the notion that it will turn it into a titan.

Racing gas simply supports higher compression ratios and timing advance curves common to higher performance engines because of it's higher octane and detonation (spark knock) resistance.

If your engine is stock, use what the manufacturer reccommends...why would they lie? Any performance difference using other than that is either imagined or something else is a factor.

I would reccommend good quality (name brand) fuel, the cheap stuff doesn't have the additive package that better quality fuel does. In this case you certainly do get what you pay for.

Honestly, i wouldn't try mixing the 2. The race fuel is at a higher octane rating and it only takes less of a spark to fire. Mixing may cause your engine to malfunction. You should only feel the difference in your Sport bike (assuming "sportster" is not a Harley). If it is a Harley, I don't think there will be any change. As for the DB's, again I must say i have not heared of the race fuel for any DB. Just Rockets, hope this helps.
Don't waste that fuel in the sportster...The sportster falls into carbidetooth's guidelines...Run it out in the dirt bikes...50/50 with premium...Big-bore dirt bikes like yours can often benefit from the added octane... as they are more detonation prone...Some bikes are borderline of needing a 50/50 blend straight from the factory once they are jetted clean...
race gas is for high compression race motors. I've run it on my cbr1000rr once (its the only gas they had at the track at the time) I didnt notice a difference except that the exhaust smelled funny.
Personally, I wouldnt mix that stuff 50/50 in your sportster or dirt bikes. They probably require 87 octane and vp is like 110. That might cause the motor to not run right.
I would dilute the vp in alot of 87 octane. like 70/30.
after draining water out of fz600 i started mixing 15%race fuel in gas it ran a LOT better than before.i kept doing so untill i sold it 1 year later. no problems but 50/50 is risky i was told.
haha, newfound power... race gas isnt going to add horsepower to your bikes it may make them run a little better but thats it. you are really gonna be wasting the race gas. If anything run it in the dirtbikes 50/50 at least the exhaust will have a different smell to it.
no one asked how old is this gas?
Has it been opened, or still sealed?
Why did your buddy give it to you? Is it too old for him to race?
What octane is it? (VP makes several) Red, Blue, Purple, etc....

If your buddy is a racer, and gave it away, it may be because it is a bit old, and not as useful for his high compression motors.

Chances are your bike does not need the higher octane, and you will just be burning expensive gas. But it was free to you.

I'd sell it on Craigslist, and buy 3x the amount of regular fuel with the money

If your motor "knocks" on regular gas, because you have a high compression motor, then you need higher octane.

Just pouring high octane fuel into a motor will NOT make it perform better. (it is a myth)
