1985 Honda VT500 Shadow under high load, it feels like your running out of gas? |
The bike sat for 15 years in my dads garage. I thouroly cleaned the carbs and changed the plugs. the bike runs excellent until you get up arond 4500 rpm. When it starts acting up, it still acellerates, but its just real jerky (like runnig out of gas)?? I was told there must still be dirt in the fuel system. Any help on how to get it all out or other suggestions would be appreciated. Mix a cup of GUMMOUT with a tamk of gas and take a long easy ride. { Be sure there is no rust in the gas tank}. Source(s): 40 years in the business Did you examine the jets closely after you cleaned the carbs? My guess is that the bike sat for 15 years and really gummed up the main and pilot jets. I'd replace them unless you have a jet cleaning kit to fit your jets. what did you clean them with? the best thing to use is a professional carb cleaner.I think gunk makes this.take that carbs completely apart and let them soak over night.rinse them clean with brake parts or carb cleaner spray.reassemble with new kits.is it a single carb or dual? you may have to get duals sychronized Pull the petcock from the fuel tank and clean it.There is a screen in there above the sediment bowl that probably needs cleaning. There shold be a screen on the reserve tube that needs cleanig also. there were 2 types of carbs put on early vt's do you have the cv carbs? (remove the top of the carb, if you see a black diaphram or rubber peice, they are cv.) check the diaphrams on all the carbs for cracks/holes. if you find any , this is your problem. replace all the diaphrams and you should notice a marked difference. the cv carb works off vacuum from the engine from about 1/4 to full throttle . if this bike sat for as long as your say, they may be in poor shape. also check the boots that hold the carbs to the intake, and vacuum lines. hope this helps motorcycle technician 25yrs |
