Wearing cycling shorts...?

I just bought my bike and gear and planning my first cycling ride. My question is if I'm suppose to wear underwear under my cycling shorts? I've tried them on underneath at home, but it feels very uncomfortable and I would think once I start my ride, it would feel even worse. However, without my uw, you can definitely see the detail outline of my package, which is probably offensive to wear in public. The uw seems to smooth out any distinct lines. I've never heard of wearing a jock or thong or anything like that, so what's the norm?

Absolutely no uw! That's the same mentality of wearing uw under boardshorts - They weren't designed for wearing anything underneath. Yet another example of our ultra conservative culture in the U.S. to cover up and hide what is natural. It's no secret that you have a package. If you fill the shorts out, then walk with pride! Those that are looking are either hungry for it, or envious.
As the others stated, chaffing and irritation will be uncomfortable, so that alone is reason not to wear the uw.

Commando only! I know they sell bike undershorts, but they sell lots of things we don't need. That's free enterprise.

Congratulations on your package. I'm confused why you would be so concerned about your natural gifts. Do you also stoop over to disguise the fact that you are tall?

The norm is to wear bicycling shorts. That's the purpose for which they are designed and manufactured.

Underwear...Never, never, never.

Unless of course your into rashes.

Bike shorts are designed to reduce friction against your skin. When underwear becomes soaked with sweat it turns into sandpaper as you ride. Make sure you buy shorts with a camois (Pad) in them and not just skin tight lycra shorts. One good rule when buying shorts is don't skip on the price. The more you spend the more comfortable you'll be.

Most riders prefer not to wear Underwear but if you are uneasy about going without they make things called cycling briefs

you can buy them with or without the pad. I used too wear them them when I first started riding the DF. You can also buy them at Nashbar and most cycling shops. Don't feel like your alone with this subject, many riders feel and go through the same thing.

Bike shorts are designed to go Commando. I'm assuming you have real bike shorts with a pad or chamois in the crotch.

Don't sweat the package. Half the population has one, the other half wants it. Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that you have one.

NO never wear underwear with your bike shorts.
It will be uncomfortable and cause rubbing in the wrong area.
no one ever told me that the outline of my package was offensive to them..
The norm is to let your package show

K

No, you're not supposed to wear UW. It's all about minimizing chafing and friction.
Maybe the big package will attract more chicks too!

When you're riding, no one can see your equipment...

...unless you ride out of the saddle, thrusting your groin at oncoming traffic.

it's called freeballing. the most comfortable thing ever.
