Fixed gear bike/ Single Speed?

I have a single-speed road bike and am soon converting to fixed gear, although that is irrelevant to my question. Right now i am riding with a 52t chainring in front and 16t SS in the back. If you know anything about single speed, that is a really high gear ratio. I want to go to a lower ratio, but the problem is, i cannot change my chainring...I forget what it is called, but the chainring is pressed to the crank arms. I want to just get a 19t cog when i get my new fixed hub, but i am afraid it might just be too big! I understand that the gear ratio and inches are good, but i don't know about having such a long chain. If you have any advice, or an opinion....let me know! The one good thing about riding 52/19 is that i will have 19 skid patches and like 73 gear inches. Pretty much all i am wanting is for some people to confirm that it will be smart to get a 19t cog instead of paying for a new crank set and bottom gasket.

TBH I didn't know single cogs went as high as 19T. At least I've learnt something.

What's wrong with having a longer chain?

I would recommend getting a 48T or similar chainset and BB. This way you have much more gearing possibilities in the rear.

I Said "Chainset" you idiot. Get a while new "chainset" and bottom bracket, and you'll be able to have much more gearing possibilities.

Wait, I shouldn't be helping someone so dumb and ungrateful as you. Report Abuse
