Is this a good bike? Momgoose Tyax Super?

I am wanting to get a 2008 Tyax super mountain bike from mongoose, and it runs about 500$. From the reviews I have read about it, it is a good bike for the price, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any other brands or bikes that would work better. I ride mainly on the road, but If I can, me and my buddies go ride some trails in the mountains. I have heard that the tires are not good for off-road, so If I do get it, what kind of tires should I get in addition to the stock kenda tires to switch out when i go to the mountains?

That is actually a VERY hot bike for the money, you'd have a tough time finding a better specced bike for the bucks. $550 for SRAM SX5 and discs and a 100mm magnesium uppers fork?! Excellent deal.

Mongoose is constantly ridiculed for their place at Walmart but it is ignored that they have some very good bikes available at bike shops as well.

The Kenda Komodos are just a bit light for offroad but I don't think I'd change them out... if I did want to find a more mtb friendly tire perhaps another Kenda model with heavier tread would be a good choice but you'd really become limited on the road.

That is a good bike in its price range. Make sure to get the right size. Don't worry about new tires yet until you finish the ones you have.
