Would you let your 13 year old son buy a $1200 bike?

the bike has everything i want, it is a cannondale Rush 5 with a full suspension and a lefty fork. it is only $1200 the cheapest in the state, if you were to get a hardtail that would be another $300 .the bike is a 2007.i want to get this to replace my 2005 trek 3900 which is a safety hazard to ride, whenever you are pedeling the chain always gets tied up in the pedels and you dont know when it is going to happen. Also it would be payed off by november which is just half of a year away, so it is not like i am losing that much money. My mom says she wont let me get it because i will be buying a car in 3 years and she thinks it would be a waste. but i disagree because i will be going to college just 1 year after i get my car and my license, and with gas surley being at least $7 dolars a gallon i will be riding my bike around campus to save money and get an exercise. my mom says if i was a little younger like 8-10 she would let me get it, but who would trust an 8 year old with a $1200 bike

WOWOWO, these people arent seeing the real view behind this! This is a 13 year old youngman...He obviously has a passion for riding if he's more worried about high gas prices than dishing out over a grand for a bicycle. People don't understand the connection between a rider and his bike. You guys gotta see that this kid doesn't view his bike as a toy to ride to his friend's house on, this is his love and passion that takes him on a new journey everyday. His bike is everything. Riding is everything. I GUARANTEE you this kid isnt dieing to get drunk or smoke weed or do any other drugs or acts of violence because he has his bike and his friends and that's all he needs right now outside of school. And the chick thats talking about maturity... this dude's 13... I think he shoed more than adequate machurity in his question. Life isn't about maturing. U spen ur life tryng 2 mature and look a certain way for a certain someone else then u become a loser... U spend ur life trying to get by while also enjoying what you do and ur a success. Just take a second to seriously think...EVERY 13 year old boy is DIEING to get behind the wheel of a car and go driving with their friends BUT this young man here wants a bike that will take him on countless adventures. I guess you really gotta ride a REAL MTB or BMX to really understand the art and beauty behind it. >As a response to ur question, Im with you man.Bikes and public transportation will get u anywhere you need to go while ur in school and all.Don't worry about a car man. These days cars r just status symbols.u got the right mind kid.Bike=no gas.Oh, and i gotta question for you...why dont you use that 1200 to mod your bike you have now?Justa question, i dont know the current state of ur bike lol But keep ridin man! Never let anyone or anything ever keep u off your rig! ALWAYS wear a helmet and try to get pads/gloves (trust me,ur friends may tlk $hit on em but wen ur out there riding they BOOST your confidenceand you have no choice but to excel! Hit me up on AOL or Facebook sometime... (by the way, Kristen L is a retard!)

I'm going to say "NO", and this is why;

Your previous bike, the Trek 3900 has a small problem which any bicycle mechanic could fix, and you're giving-up on it.

Learn to fix the bike you have, or take it to a bicycle shop to have it repaired.
Maybe it just needs oil on the chain.

Hm. When I was 12 I joined a bike team as a midget racer. My first real bike cost me $867 and my parents nearly killed me... this was 1974, but I earned the money to buy it.

I think your parents would be glad to let you buy whatever you want if you earn the money.

I've gotta agree with AMS. why haven't you properly maintained your current ride? otherwise, I'm all for paying for a quality ride, especially if the kid is as passionate about riding as you!

dude just tell your mom piss off and that its your money and that you can do whatever you want with it

Heck yeah I would. You can do alot of riding in three years lol.

if this is your money, then i believe you can use it as you see fit.....if it is borrowed money, then no....save up all before you buy...

I would have him work for half the money (say $600) and I would match it $600 if he shows responsibility.

sure. the kid will only be 13 once. but only if he is a behaved and mature young man.

save it all up and then decide what you want.

NO! unless you were a famous BMX

haha no save up 4 a hybrid

ya I would

Yeah, in 3 years you will have a car and you will never touch that bike again. Save the money and put it towards the car you are going to need sooner than you think. You get your permit in two years! But if you are concerned about gas prices - get a job once you have your car and get a cheep (but just as functional) bike as the one you want. And it isn't like people are going to come up to you like "OMG dude that is a sweet bike" It will look just like any other bike to any person. But, $1200 can make a difference in someone saying "OMG dude that is a sweet car!"
