I have a bicycle chain question: How do you get a "knot" out of a bicycle chain, and/or...?

...how do you know which "bicycle chain link" is the "master link" so you could pry it apart and put it back together?

...my bicycle chain has pulled a "magician's trick" on me, and I'm struggling to get it back to normal...Dammit, Jim! I'm a musician, not a mechanic?!?

This is spooky, folks! Somehow the closed loop of my bicycle chain went through the closed loop of my bicycle frame...

We're getting ready to call The Vatican...

First off...remain calm Pocko.

Close your blinds. Open a window, burn a candle, light a match. Call over your neighbor....and light up the doobage and chill...

and then come back here and ask some nonsense questions.

That's happened a bunch of times to me.....usually you can just "unloop" it but sometimes you really have to look at it and wonder how in the hell it happened and how to undo it! :o)

I don't think I can give any better instructions....ya just have to look at it. Rest assured that you don't need to break the chain to fix it, though....it got that way while it was together so it can get un- that way with your help.

If your chain has a master link, then look for one that is a different color or that seems to have an extra oblong c-clip on one side. There are several kinds of them, but they all snap on/off in some way.

Keep trying....you'll figure it out.

Here's what I would do......
Calmly.....yes calmly.......

Take the dang thing and throw it across the yard.....leave it there till it rusts!

But as usualy hubby would come home from work and take it to the workshop and fix it.
And since I have given it a goood toss, not only the chain would be broken.
So it may call for a replacement.
See, that's how you do it!

First soak the chain in oil, then jiggle it back and forth at the knot until it loosens. The master link is usually a lighter color the rest of the chain. Good luck.

If you have a master link like a quick-link, it'll have slots near the rivets, so the pins can slide toward each other to disengage. The SRAM version is gold colored.

Nice reference to Star Trek.

i like your ending to you chain story
