How to BMX?

I'm trying to get into bmx but im having some problems doing anything.. I've built up my stamina on the bike a little bit but im far from pro. Any tips on first tricks to learn to kinda boost my confidence and get me started? I wanna start going to a indoor bmx park but i dont want to go until i have at least gotten some trick down. By the way im about 180ish lbs and 5' 6" think bmx will help me lose some weight? and do you think i should work out some to build some muscle /lose some fat before i start trying to really get into bmx? I have a Haro X-03 Backtrail Series i know it isnt the best but it should be a fine trash bike for learning right? By the way what kind of protection gear do you wear when learning? Riding indoor parks / outdoor? riding street or flatland?
