How can I get rust off my bike??? |
Left my bike in the rain and now its rusty. Anone know of anyway I can fix it? Anything that works on removing rust?? Hey, You may be able to get rid of some of the surface rust with steel wool, thin sandpaper, or a metal cleaner like CLR nothing will get rid of the rust. When metal rusts it creates holes in the metal (called pitting). A rusty chain needs to be replaced, because when it runs over the gears, it will just wear down and skip - wearing down the cassette and chainrings too!! Rusty gears (cassette, chainrings) need replacing - no other solution. rust on the cables can be fixed by replacing them too. Even if the rust is scraped off the cables where you can see, it will be in the housing for the cable, and simply cause friction. If the person you are selling it to test rides it, the gears might not shift smoothly, and the brakes harder than normal to squeeze. Even if you clean the chain, and it works good enough (use a degreaser - like WD40 or one from a bike shop or hardware store - WD40 is mostly accelerants but is cheap, then relube), there is no solution for the cables but to replace them. Rust on the nuts and bolts and any other metal place will mostly come off with steel wool or a metal cleaner like CLR good luck Source(s): work in a bike shop well...use sand paper to sand over 1st...(sand is light) and apply wax to poolish up. Coca-Cola my friend. Don't believe me, ask your grandpa! I am banging my brains to remember something I used many years ago(on Lambretta frames) that, after you removed the surface rust, you painted it on(consistency of water) and it turned rust dark grey and prevented it spreading. If I recall it turned Iron oxide(rust) into another less virulent oxide(lead, springs to mind for some reason!) Maybe someone else can remember its name? Sorry I cant be more help than that! You could always try naval jelly. I've never tried it on a bike but is dissolves rust...just be careful what it might to to other things like paint etc but that stuff will strip rust off like no ones biz. |
