In bmx racing is it safer or more dangerous to use clipless pedals? |
Will they help develop a young rider, or will they impede a kid from learning good fundamentals? My 5 year old is about to move up to intemediate level and thinks he wants clips. What is the best brand for a little kid to click in and out of? I have raced for over 10 years now. I have used SPD's for most of them. With the child being that young, they should stay on flats and really learn all the fundamentals before they clip in. It does make certain things easier and regardless of what people say they will make you faster, BUT without knowing the basics and having that control it will hender their riding. I today still practice with flats on 80% of the time. I'm not into BMX myself but I have learned quite a bit from my neighbor's two kids who race BMX. Clipless are the thing now. As a road bicyclist, I can see why. With clipless, your feet are positioned for maximum efficiency and comfort at all times. When doing jumps, your little guy won't have to worry about his feet moving on the pedals on a land and they are easy to get in and out of with minimal practice. I believe that BMX racers are using the same pedals as mountain bikers ( like Eggbeaters, SPDs, etc.)- so the shoes will have a recessed cleat so they can walk on them like regular shoes when they aren't on the pedals. Check at a BMX shop for more on that. it is probably more dangerous because if you fall you could get crushed under your bike and they take longer to get on and off i do bmx street and i wuld say more dangerous cos if u bail clipless u can put ur foot out but clips if u fall u fall staight down with the bike on u cos u culdnt unclip ur feet in time there dangerous. and him being five makes it worse. the clips make it harder to bail (obviously) but if you do get them he needs to work up skill on them and not just jump right on. work on clicking them in and out. but even if he can do it in half a second the first time when trying to bail you freak out and forget everything. |
