Rust on my bike...?

What is the most effecient way to remove rust from my bike?
And what about the chain... or would it be easier to just replace the chain?

I assume you're asking for a do-it-at-home technique?

Well, if you have rust, you have steel parts.

To remove rust, take some sandpaper to it. Nothing too rough though. Try to remove the rust as best you can. Don't run the sandpaper over any paint on your bike. The paint acts as a protective shield to prevent rust - if you remove the paint, you'll have more rust.

You don't have to clean out ALL the rust. It's not rocket science. However, it is advisable that you get rid of most of it.

When you're done "cleaning up," get your bike painted. You can do this at home with various paints, or you can take it to the shop. The paint will help protect your bike from further rust and corrosion. If it's just a small spot, try to find a color that is similar to your bike, and just paint over that spot (if you don't want a complete paint job. You could use spray paint, for example.

For the chain:

I'd recommend a fresh chain. You'll run faster and easier with a fresh chain. However, if you're just getting from A to B, and not seeking high performance, you could just clean the chain.

You could use WD-40 to fix it in a pinch, but that won't hold out for any length of time.

Try soaking the chain in some rust solution, like CLR. Fill a bucket. Let it soak. etc. etc. Then take a towel or toothbrush to it and try to scrub off the rust.

When you're done "de-rusting" the chain, cover it in a medium weight grease. You can go to the bike store and ask the guys there for some bike chain grease. It's not expensive - it's common. However, if you don't want to go out, you could use white lithium auto grease as a substitute. It works just as well. Remember to get the grease inside of your chain, not just on it. This involves moving the chain to expose more while greasing it.

Good luck!take it to a bike shop
