Paint your own bike? |
What's the best paint to spray paint your own bike? Where can you get a bike AirBlasted Sanded? Maaco? lol Actually, your "lol" is not so "lol". Maaco or just about any body shop can paint your bike, but you'll have to provide the bare frame. They can prep it and paint it, and in the case of Maaco they will even bake on the finish... and it will cost a LOT less than if you try to do it yourself... probably about $80. You'll need close to $80 in materials to paint your frame yourself PLUS many hours of work. Powder coating requires that the paint be stripped while regular painting only need to have a sanded smooth surface. By the way, powder coating is NOT paint, it is synthetic powder that is then baked on. If you have an aluminum frame do NOT have it sandblasted as it will work harden the frame and cause it to break within days of riding it again. If it is aluminum then it will need to be chemically stripped or walnut shell blasted. Source(s): 27 years in the industry You don't want to sand blast it as it may damage the frame...Re-painting a bike frame is a major job. And alot of work to do it right. If you don't do it right, the paint will come off easy. I'd go to a local bike shop and ask them for help. I tried to do this myself, and the results were not good. Don't. Look up "Powder Coaters" in your phone book. Powder coat is one of the most durable types of paint--try to scratch your refrigerator with your fingernails. Fridges are powder coated. Most of them will do the stripping of the old paint and sandblasting themselves so it is done CORRECTLY. I just restored a 1970 Reynolds Cro-Moly frame and had it powder coated yellow and it looks fantastic. If you spray paint your bike -- even if a body shop applies auto paint, it will scratch off easily. Worse yet aerosol paint will rub off. |
