Will the front Shimano XTR derailleur work with my bike?

The derailleur is called the XTR Mega 9 M960

I have an 8 speed cog with Shimano derailleurs. Currently, I have Alivio front and rear, but I'm upgrading the rear to XTR 960.

What the heck does MEGA 9 mean?-and will it work with an 8spd cog?

Hey,

Absolutely no problem using the M960 on 8 speed drivetrains.

You'll need to check the clamp size on your current derailleur and see if its the same as the XTR though...

For this one, I might go to a shop, because there are the following considerations with front deraillers:

- is the clamp size right?
-top pull or down pull?
- top swing or bottom swing or E-type?

Most deraillers accomodate both top and down pull now, so you don't need to worry about that.

From what I can see from schwinn's website, it looks like they use top swing deraillers... but I'd check at a shop.

Also, you will need to break your chain for the front derailleur.

Lastly, there is not much point getting an XTR front derailler unless you're trying to save grams. it works the same as XT and LX - so I'd save yourself some $$$

Yep, what he said. Sure, you can use the rear with no problem although I agree you can spend less money and get great performance with XT or even LX. The width of a 9-spd cassette and an 8-spd cassette are pretty much the same, so just set up the derailleur limit screws as you normally would.

The only time you run into great troubles is when you try to mix 8/9 spd shifters with the opposite cassettes, or when you have mismatched combos of front/rear gears, because the width of the chain will often matter (like if you had a 9spd cassette and chain but had thicker old-style 8spd chainrings. Or if you're running an 8spd chain on a 9spd cassette, which has less space between each cog than an 8spd cassette spacing, thereby causing the chain to rub noisily or even skip/ghost shift).

I think spending money on an expensive front derailleur is a waste, personally. Most of your performance comes from good chainrings and a chain that's in good shape. You should have no trouble setting up the front whichever one you choose, though.

Mega 9 is Shimano's marketing name for the 9spd drivetrain. It's supposed to remind you that A) they're superior and you should envy them, and B) they produce a drivetrain with parts that are capable of handling gears with a wider range and larger cogs than what used to be the norm.
