Gears on a bike? |
I never bought a bike with gears before and my child need's a new bike and i found one he likes with 6 gears can you please tell me whicth is good fo spee and withch is god for hills and bumpy places Thanks Hi, lower gears (bigger rings) make it easier to pedal, and are used for hills, harder terrain higher gears (smaller cogs) enable you to go faster. Shifting gears going uphill can cause some problems with the tension on the chain. I find with kids, a lot of it is trial and error, and trying the different gears. usually, it seems, kids don't shift gears as much as they should good luck Source(s): work in a bike shop When buying a bike for a kid, don't worry about gears. Worry about correct fit. It's been a while, but I remember the lower gears were for hills and stuff. As you go up in gear, the bike gets pedals harder, while lower it pedals extremely easily. You can go up a big hill in gear one and not have to stand up to pedal. The smallest chainring on the back is best for speed, The Largest chainring on back is good for steep hills. gear 1 is for slow difficult cycling like going up a hill and there is little resistance when pedalling. gear 6 is for fast cycling as you can pedal less times to get more power, however the resistance is more. You don't make it clear but I guess your proposed bike has 6 sprockets on the rear wheel to give you the gears. The smaller sprockets are high gears, good for speed especially down hill. The middle sprockets serve best in average conditions and the larger sprockets give you low gears, good for going uphill or against the wind. On rough terrain a kid shouldn't be going too fast and therefore probably using the lower gears Make sure you get your kid a helmet. Bramble |
