Dos and Don'ts of spray painting bicycle frame.? |
How many layers? Laquer or Primer? Paint stripper is it essential? Don't spray it. Chemical strip the frame to bare metal and find a powder coating shop with experience with bicycles and have it powder coated. My husband has had 2 frames painted and the person painting them has had him totally strip off all the old paint. I'm not sure on the layers and such. One was a black powder coat job. The other was a paint job. Not sure how it was done exactly. Go to homedepot and get some paint strip and some gloves and some fine steel wool as well as some 800 grit and 1400 grit sand paper. Strip the bike of all components Spray the paint strip and put on your gloves, scrape off the paint and use the steel wool to get any left over paint off. Wipe down the bike and sand with the steel wool and the 800 grit untill the bike looks clean of debris that will make the paint look ugly. Wipe down with an alcohol prep like Windex or just plain alcohol. Spray a very ligt coat of primer, wait an hour, lightly scuff with steel wool and add more primer, wait 1 hour. Add more primer, wait an hour add 1 more primer coat. Wait untill the next day, lightly scuff primer and spray a light coat of what ever color you are spraying. wait 2 hours spray again. Wait a day, lightly scuff, spray some more coats, 2 hours time between. Wait 2 days and put it back together. The faster you go the stickier the paint is going to be when you re assemble. If you take your time the paint should cme out nice. my hoffman condor frame i got resprayed stripped all old paint off and i tink sprayed it the paint colour and lots of laquer but not sure sowwi |
