Nishiki bike? |
I might get a nishiki bike frame that is red and white, and says olympic on it, does any one know much about this bike frame, if it is worth much, what year, is nishiki a good brand? id like all the info i can get on this frame. thanks. The Nishiki Olympic, if it is an older frame, was built up until 1985 or 86. It was made of high quality Tange steel tubing, fully lugged and brazed. It was a nice frame. If you are considering the possibility of building this up with modern parts it really isn't a good idea. There are several structural reasons for this: 1) The rear wheel spacing is 120mm instead of the more modern 130mm. Just "springing" the frame to squeeze the wheel in will result in alignment and tracking problems; 2) Sometime during the frame manufacture the wheel diameter spec was changed from 27" to 700C.. I can't remember exactly when. This means that you won't be able to mount brakes on it without a drop bolt... and they are getting very hard to find; 3) I am pretty sure that this frame had noplace to easily mount common items, particularly waterbottle cages, so you'll need to use clumsy clamps to hold them on. 4) There are DEFINITELY no braze ons for STI shifting, so you'll need to find a clamp that used to be for stem mounted shifters to allow STI or you'll need to go with downtube shifters which are very rare now. All this being said, I am not sure if the Olympic model has been revived since the mid 80s so it could be that I am full of hot air. By the way, the Nishiki marque is now owned by Raleigh USA, the same people that own Raleigh, Univega, and Diamondback... mostly decent, reasonably priced stuff. Source(s): 27 years in the industry I've still got my 1973 Nishiki International. You might be able to get it running, even today. I put 700c wheels on mine and loaned it to several people for their first triathlon. The brakes will probably reach by moving the pads to the limit of their travel. It worked on mine. Can't comment on the wheel spacing as the ones I used were early vintage 700c, so it wasn't an issue. I doubt its worth anything as a collector item if that's what you were asking. |
