I want to buy a bicycle. I have know idea where to start. What are the best makes.?

I will be riding for pleasure as well as the odd bike rides.

Your best bet would be to go to a local bike shop. For cruising around town mainly on the road try a comfort bike. Comfy seat, lots of gears for the hills and not very expensive. Avoid stores like walmart or target, bikes sold by these stores are lower quality bikes.

Here's an example of a comfort bike

Well you need to decide. Do you want street bike, mountain bike or Santa Cruz style bike.

If you want a light bike go with street. IF weight is NOT an issue but comfortability, go with Santa Cruz. If you like doing off road do mountain.

As for popular brands, Giant is good (street and mountain), Finest Al (Street, Mountain). I've had street from both these. You can get a moderately priced bike from them in and around the $400 range. Now you may think "that's expensive" but these guys have bikes that go over the $2000 mark (Easily) and have solid carbon frames. Go to a bike store, try a few out. You won't know what you like unless you try.
Cyclist... Enjoy my street bike.
Go to a bike shop and look around for comfort bikes in your budget. Avoid cheap dept store bikes, they don't last. As for brand, most bike frames are all made in the same factories (unless they are very high end), with most of the accessories coming from a handful of manufacturers.
well if u want the top of the line bikeu should get a trek bike, it's a couple of g's but its worth it, if u want just a ok bike it won't be brand name the cheapest brand nam bike is like 300 bucks
Some of the most common good makes are specialized, cannondale, jamis, fuji, and giant, but many of these may be too steeply priced for your riding purposes. Anything at a local bike shop (NO DEPT STORE BIKES) will be of fairly high quality. Go to one and test a few out, then you can decide how much you are willing to spend and what type of bike you will need for your riding. I would talk with one of the employees to get a better idea of what you want/need in your price range.
First, do NOT buy your bike from target or walmart unless you plan to pay twice the value of the bike to repair it. Go to your bike shop and ask for a comfort bike from specialized or giant
