Why are there no Canadians and so few Americans on the Tour de France?

Are there Canadians who are trying to get on the tour, but just aren't good enough, or is it generally overlooked by Canadian cyclists ... virtually all competitors are European.

In europe, cycling is huge, it is like American football or hockey in North America. Consequently, more youth are cycling instead of playing other sports as they do in Canada and the US, so there is a larger pool of talent to draw from. If cycling was as big as football, baseball, basketball and hockey here in North America, more kids would play it and more kids would turn professional. It's just a numbers game.
One Canadian pro cyclist that comes to mind is Steve Bauer who raced for the old 7-11 team about 20 years ago.

I don't have a a list of current Canadian pro cyclists, but there are a quite a number of Canadians on the domestic pro circuit.
Not overlooked at all. All pro cyclists would dream of being in the Tour. Most North American's know nothing of the 100s of pro races aside from the Tour. There are lots of cycling pros in Canada and the US, but there are many more in Europe because it's a major sport there. As with any sport the more popular it is, the more people that participate, the more support (teams, training centers and races) there is.

There are good number of US cyclists in the Tour now. If it was more popular here we'd have many more Tour riders.
What I can't understand is why there's no Chinese riders in the Tour.
There are 400,000,000 bicyclists in China, that's more than the total population of the US and canada combined.
