I cant really afford bones swiss bearings so what is a really good quality and very fast bearing at low cost? A lot of it has to do with the quality of the installation and setup, not necessarily the bearing. Get good quality stainless steel balls, then completely degrease and clean all surfaces. Apply a THIN coating of white lithium grease to the races, install the bearings, and adjust them carefully. Do not add more grease. More grease does not make bearings run faster or better, and careful adjustment is the absolute key. Source(s): 27 years in the industry I agree. There has been a lot of testing done on the ceramic and "high-performance" bearings, and pretty much everyone agrees that the benefit is SO minimal as to not be concerned with it unless you have lots of money to burn, are sponsored, or are an elite professional competitive cyclist. You can run loose balls or caged balls instead of a sealed bearing if you want super silky smooth (with the right hub, of course). The seals on bearings add resistance, but they do put maintenance at a minimum (or zero). White lithium is great, so are other light bearing greases. More grease won't hurt, but as said above, all that's needed is a moderate coating. Running old-style bearings will require you to service them frequently if you ride alot or have contaminating riding conditions, and excess grease is just an unneccessary hassle when you overhaul. |
