Can women race in Tour de France? |
I have serched as many web sites to find this answer. None of them have strait answers. Please help. Thanks. One Italian woman (now dead) did ride the tour many years ago but it was seen as a publicity stunt, though, if recall correctly she did not finish last. Even with today's advances in training, nutrition & technology the best women riders would not finish 'Le Tour' stages. In the old days the conditions gave women's naturally high endurance a chance but modern speeds would leave even world champion female riders well outside the time limit for each stage (Slow riders are disqualified if they do not finish within a certain time of the stage winner on stage races as per UCI regulations). As a rough illustration, the world record for women in the short distance pursuit (Velodrome event) is 3'24"537 for 3 km. The men's record stands at 4'11"114 which is for 4 km! 33% further than the women's but only 47 seconds slower. To put it in further perspective the Junior men's record (boys under 18) is actually 7 seconds FASTER than the adult women's record (for the same 3 km distance). Sadly physiology rules, and if you think time limits are unfair, try waiting round for the last rider a couple of hours after everyone else has gone home... :~( Source(s): http://www.uci.ch/modello2.asp?1stleveli... I don't see why they can't. They have to be on a team first, that is almost tougher than the actual race. Yes they can. i am not sure but they should be yup if armstrong can do it with just one of his balls...a woman can do it with no balls... There are no rules that specifically exclude women from the competition. But they must qualify. To date, no women have done so. |
