How can I carry heavy textbooks while riding my bike (without throwing out my back)? |
I have many heavy books. I can get a bike rack or something. Is there a pannier that's not too expensive, or something that would work well for books? Not that it answers your question, but it remainds me of a trip I made to China. There are millions of bikes in Beijing. They use them for EVERYTHING. I was once on a bus and saw these little Chinese guys roping a refrigerator...a FULL SIZE refrigerator, on the back of some rickety bike. How they got it balanced on the rear rack and how in the world the rider was able to balance with a 200 pound refrigerator is totally beyond me. Anyway, I went in my pack to get a camera... I NEEDED a picture of this... and by the time I turned back he- and the refrigerator- were gone. So, how do you carry some heavy textbooks on a bike? Get a rack and some good bungee cords. My friend did this and he thought it was great. I think they are also called Bicycle Panniers, or rear racks. You should be able to find one at any good bicycle store, I think for about $15-20 or so. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=... You may find decent rear panniers of good made in second hand sport equipment or discount sport shop . Plenty of those for reasonable price . My friend got almost new Axiom touring series panniers ( 60 liters capacity )for $ 30 and front lowriders loaders from Voyager (40 liters , side loaders) for $ 40 and it was like new . It has even rain covers . I did see used good made old Serratus panniers in excellent shape just for $ 15 in second hand store last week , so I did grab it . I can afford for this price have it nice panniers in my commuter bike so I do not have to switch Orliebs from my touring bike to commuter bike any more . |
