Does replacing a bicycle rim cost more than truing it? |
Does replacing a bicycle rim cost more than truing it? It all depends. Most "mid line" bikes (between $250 and $1000) that have full-spoke-count wheels (32 or 36 spokes) can be repaired relatively cheaply. It is the really cheap and really expensive bikes that have trouble. Replacement of a wheel on a cheap bike often costs more than the whole bike, and replacement of a wheel on a good bike can cost from several hundred to over $1000.... for ONE wheel. 1) If it came from a cheap (under $150) bike the repair may exceed the value regardless of how badly it is bent; 2) If it is out of round because a flat spot was put into it from running low pressures or landing wrong then it can't be repaired and replacement will be needed; 3) If it got 'tacoed' (bent similar to how a taco shell looks), it can usually be repaired but will require replacement soon. Source(s): 27 years in the industry it would help if i knew what wheels we are talking? traditional 32/36 spoke wheels can be trued easily. some of the newer specialty wheels may have limits on what you can do. in fact, anyone that is going to be riding a lot needs to learn to true thier own wheels. a bike is a very simple thing. i think people are afraid of it, but it isnt that tough to master. i am kind of mechanical by nature and i just dove in and learned it, but if you must buy a book on repairing bikes. trueing wheels is easy and takes only minutes. here shops charge a lot of money to do it, and with practice anyone can master it. yes, rims cost a lot so just do the Turing, change the rim only if cracked, broken or bent really really bad lets see you have never replaced a hoop before have you? after the hoops are switched guess what the next step is?? true the wheel. then you ride the bike with the wheel. then you will probably have to re true the wheel again. this will need to be repeated a couple of times. replacing a rim does cost more than truing it. If the rim isn't badly damaged, it's only going to cost about $10 to have it trued. Replacing the rim is going to be around $40 for labor plus the cost of the rim, which will be at least $30. It could be more if spokes need to be replaced. Just depends on your rims. If you got a cheap bike, you might want into some better rims and tires. |
