What can you do to protect your bike from the elements? |
I am an apartment dweller. I just recently moved from where I was living to another apartment with my fiance. Between my stuff and her stuff, there is no where to put my bike. She says I should put it on the balcony, but I'm afraid that exposure to the elements would ruin it. I have a Trek 7200 which I spent about $400 on, and I really don't want anything to ruin this bike. http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/200... It has an aluminum frame, so I know it won't rust, but I'm not sure about the other components (gears, chains). If I put it on the balcony with a tarp or cover over it, will that suffice in protecting it? What about the winter time? What have other apartment dwellers done? putting your gal before your bike. Man she's got you. also, it will rust the components, screws, cables chain and even inside the allen head. Lived from anchorage to desert. Moisture is bicycles Murphy Use a tarp on the balcony. Cover it well and look at it once in awhile. Try rotating the wheels and move the chain. nothing will rust if its not wet for too long so if it happens to get wet wipe it down and it'll be fine. Since the balcony was her idea, pile some of her "stuff" on the balcony and leave the bike inside. If that does not work, then look on nashbar.com, they have a bike cover that would work a lot better than a regular tarp. P If you can stay inside why not your bike? If I were you, I would put my bike First that I love and keep the bike inside in a dry room away from window or rainwater or moisture. I love my Trek 1500 too. Rain, snow and humidity are the worst enemy for the chain, derailleur and cassettes and break wire. Don't ruin your Trek. Tell you GF, either your bike should stay inside the room or to forget about you, look for other. For Christ shakes girls keeps their stupid cat, dog even themselves inside the room and your loving bike out!! I can't believe this man. Just for a suggestion there are tons of racks and ceiling mount are there in Wal-Mart even $14.00 where you can hang your bike on the ceiling against the wall, takes no room space. Keep your bike inside. Have your girlfriend sleep on the balcony. Silly girl ! if there is a storage room in you building put it there if not so get a "bike jacket" which cover the whole bike and have a zipper for sealing from rain and ice, when you get the jacket in winter time make sure the zipper is to wards the building and not out or that water might get in |
