I accidently removed the rivet from the chain when I was removing it off my bicycle.?

How can I get the rivet back in the chain.

Yep....it's not worth trying to get the pin back into the outer plate. I've done it a couple of times, but it's better to pick up a new link from the shop, or replace the chain if it's been ridden for awhile. If you can't get the right link from them, just pick up a quick-link and be happy.

If you want to try, use a couple pairs of pliers or something to rotate the outer links and give you access to one side. Then, use either a chain tool or a punch/solid surface to drive the pin into the outer plate from the outside.....this is hard with some chains, and you may just deform the outer plate in the process, in which case you'll need a new link anyway. If you get the pin in, then you should be able to reassemble everything like normal. Chances are good that the repaired link will be stiff OR too loose, so check it. It definitely won't be as strong as it was.....which is why we're recommending you don't bother with it.

One big disclaimer: if you have a Shimano chain, don't do this. Their chains use a one-time-use pin, so any time you break the chain, you're *supposed* to push out the pin and discard it. New Shimano pins are $1 or $2 each at the shop (yeah, it's a ripoff) and you need to know which chain you have (or just bring the old pin into the shop with you).

Next time, be careful when you break the chain and check to see if you can snap the chain apart before you get to the point of pushing the pin all the way out. This makes it easier to reassemble, too. Remember how many turns of the handle you use so that you can do it quickly in the future.....my heavy duty Park chain tool takes 3-1/2 turns for 9spd chains.
They are called pins, and you need to go get a new one. They make replacement pins with a rounded end so they go through easier.

DON'T try to put the old one back in as you'll most likely bend or break the link of the chain. Go to your local bike shop you use and tell them you need a link for your chain. There are lots of different types of chains, so it would be helpful to bring your chain with you (unless you know exactly what size and make it is).
Experience.
You can't.
