Cycling with mortons neuroma?

I have mortons neuroma in both feet. It has made it hard to keep up my hobby of cycling. I was wondering if anybody has any tips for me. I have quit using my mtb shoes, because it hurts me to put that pressure on the ball of my foot. I am currently getting alcohol shots in my feet to help shrink the nerve that the tumors sit on. But, until that happens if anybody has any suggestions that would be great.

I feel your pain, I knew your pain! Both feet for me too.

They went old school on me and operated on both feet taking out the nerve in the process.

Do not let them go the cortisone shot route, it's a slippery slope and will not solve the problem like your alcohol treatment.

Your shoes need to be tight up by the ankle, but extremely loose down in the ball of the foot. I still to this day ride with my forefoot strap practically open/loose.

I don't know what to tell you besides what I have. The operations were a cinch if you can talk them in to that solution. They did a local anesthetic and dug out what looked like cottage cheese (the fibrous material around the nerve the other helper responded with). I was able to see results right then. It was way easy, in a few weeks after the operations I was back on the bike. Look good luck - intense pain is not my idea of fun. Hope you find a solution! Source(s): Experience
They didn't give you a metatarsal pad or some sort of orthotic to spread out the metatarsals to relieve the pressure on the nerve? If not, ask your orthopedic/podiatrist/physical therapist about it.

You don't describe your symptoms or pathology much, but that doesnt sound like neuroma. In Morton's neuroma the nerve gets irritated and then starts to put more fibrous tissue around it, then this further compresses the nerve and it puts more tissue down, making a nasty cycle of getting worse. Your pain is usually located on the top of your foot between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals. There should be no shrinking of the nerve as they don't tend to get that swollen, and I'm not sure what the alcohol shots are going to do but dehydrate a tumor. Morton's neuroma should not be a tumor. Dehydrating with alcohol I would think, at best, would be a short term fix before water gets back in.
I'm going to go out on a limb based on the treatment you are getting and assume it is a podiatrist as this does not seem like the typical approach from an orthopedic foot specialists viewpoint. If so, find an orthopedist in your area that specializes in feet and make an appointment. It amazes me how many podiatrists I work with don't really know much about the foot.

Solutions for biking - try to get some sort of orthotic like I previously mentioned. Wear loose socks and keep your shoes loose to minimize compression over that area. You can try platforms if you aren't already using them and put your foot farther over the pedal. Another option would be to try road shoes - they have a rigid bottom so it makes it more like you are pushing thru the whole foot vs a mtn shoe which requires more flexibility. Really, I don't think this would work as you can't adjust the cleat back far enough, but if you can borrow a friend's, it'd be worth trying.
