I am 5'7"... what size bicycle frame do I need?

The average chick is a bit differently shaped than the average bloke. A little longer in the thigh, Wider at the hips, narrower at the shoulders, And shorter in the torso.

Most bikes are made for blokes, but there are WSD (women specific designs) also. The best way to be sure of your size is to go to the bike shop and jump on a few.

To give you a ROUGH idea of what to look for
A guy your size would fit in the range 52-54cm(or small) for a road bike, 15-16 inch for a mountain bike or a hybrid.

Being a chick it is most likely your torso will be a little shorter and your legs a bit longer. The more important thing to get right will be the reach (top tube length) to the handlebars. Usually a little to the lower size of these frame ranges is the better choice.

Commonly girls get a frame that is a touch to large and need to stretch to reach the handlebars. If you stretch you will not be sitting properly. Sore arms and um........soft tissue pain is common. Often this can be corrected by a good bike fitter and installing a shorter stem (the bit that holds the handle bars on). A WSD frame should be a little shorter so the stem is more likely to be right.

Now since we are down that way. Girls have a wider pelvis than guys. The next common mistake is the wrong shaped saddle.

If you get some play dough or carbon paper and roll it flat on a chair. Sit on it and wiggle a round a bit. When you get up you should see two round marks about 5-6 inches apart. This is a print of your sit bones. Take a copy of the imprint for when you select a saddle. Check this link to get an idea of how use it

Finally girls usually require slightly shorter cranks than a bloke the same size. For you maximum 170mm. (To do with the longer thigh to shin ratio in women)

In summary
PROBABLY 52 ish cm (small) road frame 15 " mountain/hybrid. Fit it with the right sized seat and no more that 170mm cranks. You may also need to change the stem.

Yes go to a bike shop and make sure. And yes get the bike fitted by someone who knows what he or she is doing.

Good luck and happy cycling
It depends on the size of your legs and inseam, not your body height. Go to a good bike shop and they can find one that is a great fit for you.
Coincidentally I am the same height. I would strongly suggest the largest size available perhaps a twenty-eight inch bicycle. One should also consider what type of bicycle one has in mind, is it a mountain bicycle, a road bicycle, or a freestyle model?
Depends on:
- what type of bike
- your inseam

For a start. The answer that says a 28" well in frame sizing that would be for a 7 foot tall person.

I'm 5' 8" and have short legs. I have a 52cm road bike and a 16.5" mountain bike. Easiest thing to do to go try some out.
get fitted at a local bike shop
there is no good formula here
First of all, let's get one thing straight. For all those people who say "oh...you need at least a 24 or a 28 inch bike" etc, you need to understand that the people who ask "what size bike do I need?" are inquiring about their FRAME size, not their wheel size. Bicycles are sized according to their seat tube length (center to center). Different bikes use different sized wheels depending on their intended application. BMX bikes normally run 20 inch wheels, but there are 24 inch wheeled BMX's as well. Mtn bikes normally run 26 inch wheels, but some are built to use a 24inch wheel with a really big tire (downhill rigs) , some use 700c (commonly refered to as "29er" wheels), and some people set their bikes up with a 29inch front/26inch rear. Road bikes almost always run 700c, although some smaller sized frames are built around 26 inch wheels to reduce toe overlap. To get back to the question about frame size, what kind of bike are you planning to buy? What is your inseam? These things are really important. A person who normally rides a 19.5 inch mtn frame might ride a 58 or 60 cm (almost 23 inch) road bike. To make a long story short, better go to the bike shop.
ps- Actual wheel size is usually a totally oddball number like 559mm or 622mm. The outside diameter of my 26x1.6 tires that I have on my singlespeed is less than 26 inches. If only we all could just learn to use the metric system...
