Anyone using the new style shimano crankset with outboard bearings? |
I just ordered a new bike, and will be using the new style shimano crank/BB. I was wondering if anyone here has used this style crank, and what they thought of it. I sure hope it's better than ISIS. I had to go back to square taper on my fixed gear because the frickin' non-drive side crank kept coming loose. UGGHH! I have used all the systems and like the outboard bearing design. They are easy to fit and remove, including the bottom bracket and I'd say require less tools than a square taper and also faster to get on and off. Wear is as good as square taper and better than ISIS. They are far stiffer than square tapers though (the reason the ISIS / Octalink system was created). I have swapped my mountain bikes onto outboard bearings and have no problems at all. I let bike shop to deal with it and it maybe is good stuff . Look stronger to . I have it about 14 days and no problem with it after about 700 km . If is better than ISIS is big question , only time and kilometers will tell . I ride with a couple guys that have 2 piece cranks with outboard bearing. They like 'em fine. But then again, the guys with ISIS and Octalink stuff like theirs too! Well, they are a little weird to service since the driveside arm is permanently fixed to the bb axle, and it takes a special tool or 2 to install it but it does seem to be a little stiffer than the other designs. This is because the bearings are closer to the arms now. That being said, with all things considered I prefer the square taper. Inherently strong, easy to service, and simple. 27 years in the industry Works pretty nice! I have used a Hone for around a year and a half without any problem. Pretty nice. I do and I have had no problems at all! With all due respect, ISIS type cranks are becoming part of yesteryear! Hope I have helped. |
