For an average cyclist, how many feet per second do they travel? |
For an average cyclist, how many feet per second do they travel? If we are assuming average speed is 15 mph, which is a reasonable recreational rider's average speed... There are 5280 ft in a mile which is 63,360 inches. 15 mph is 4-minute (240 second) miles You could go 1320 ft or 15,840 inches in a minute at that pace. Broken down into seconds you would travel approximately 22 ft. per second. Personally, I know once I hit a big hill, it feels like I am going about 22 ft per hour. Source(s): Math class Not again, Since you're asking for a specific answer to a relatively and vaguely stated question; I won't explain but simply give you the number: 29.33 FPS. This answer is 100% correct and can't be proven wrong! 20 is quite average, 15 is quite slow, well below average. Don't know why you would question me, when you're assumptions are wrong. Davie, when you start going to high school, in a year or 2 look at this question again, you'll laugh at yourself. Even your math is convoluted for such a simple calculation, apparently you skipped math a lot. Seems you disagree with everyone else's answers but yours is right? Davie, no one said your math was wrong - look up "convoluted". I'm not doing your summer school homework. You need to figure out where you went wrong. It's the only way to learn. And stop putting down BIG BLUE. I didn't trash your Polk middle school now did I? Be kind. Engineering major, graduated with honors Univerisity of Michigan - GO BLUE I agree with the math, but disagree with the "average speed" being 15mph. My opinion is that 12mph is more accurate, which would lower the feet per second from 22 to around 18. All of them. Which average cyclist do you want? Do you want one that hasn't cycled for 10 years, or one that cycles twice a week, or one that cycles every day? A commuter travels every day; a weekend warrior once or twice a week. The speed depends on fitness level and bike design (aerodynamic resistance will have a big impact on the average speed). The average including traffic signals, or an instantaneous speed that is often obtained (the mode)? 12 mph = 17.6 fps 20 mph = 29.3 fps (easily obtainable on level well paved road) Also, is this for homework? Because it sure seems like homework. |
