I am 17 a senior in high school and want to do Triathlons after high school?

Currently I am on the Cross Country Team I plan to do Triathlons when I graduate. Will XC help me and how many miles should I be cycling a week? I am going to buy a Specialized Transition Pro, are they as good as the website says?

Didn't see any answers talk about core and strength training. Both are needed to get your body ready for triathlons. If you haven't worked with a tri coach it would be a good idea to get personalized instruction. Make sure before you commit that the trainer has actual triathlon experience. Being a certified USAT Trainer would be a good indication of a trainers background.

For now I would not worry so much about miles on the bike as time on the bike. Specific bike drills, sprints intervals etc. are just as much benefit as total miles while tri training.

And last a training partner is usually very helpful. See if you can convince a friend to join you.
Sounds great! The bike is awesome.

XC of course will help. When your done with your season, start specific Tri training. You will need to search on-line, in book stores and try to contact any local club or people that are into Tri. Best way to learn is from experienced athletes.

While I know about cycling I don't know the distances you will be doing to start with. You will have to balance cycling with running and swimming. How much depends on your time available and if running, cycling or swimming needs more or less work from you. You need to work on you weakest discipline the most.

If you are in good shape and have time try to get over 100 miles a week at least. Club racers typically do around 200 miles but they don't have to swim and run either.

If the bike your thinking of getting reflects the time and dedication you will dedicate to Tri then you may find you want to do well over 100 miles. Only you can determine that. At 100 though you will get very good base conditioning.

You will need to reseach and learn training details and how to TT. There is a lot to learn to become a quality cyclist and a good Tri athelete.
Why not do tri's now?

Some kid named Lance Armstrong started out doing tri's in high school.
Welcome.

It's a definite balance and only you can answer the question based on your abilities. I found I'm very strong in the biking and running, but man the swimming kills me. So I know my weakness and areas I need to work on. I would suggest even biking during XC season, just light rides to stretch the legs. Be patient with yourself and listen to your body. Lots of good books and research on training, I have changed my training so many times. Great choice on the bike, or I would consider a Felt, very nice. All the best!
To race effectively, you're going to need to work up to 200+ miles a week.

Your cross country background should serve you well, although you may lose a little speed as your quads and hammy's get a little bigger from the cycling.
